UNESCO has considered Berlengas as a Biosphere Reserve since 2011.
There is a long history of protection of the archipelago, which began in 1465 when King Alfonso V prohibited any activity that could harm the natural life of the islanders, dictating that “in the Berlengas del mar, no one will go hunting.”.
